Parent Newsletter

January Holiday Coupon
Second grade will redeem our January coupon from the holiday coupon book on Friday, January 31st. Learners may dress comfy/wear PJs on this day! Please send a coat and wear appropriate shoes. 


Yearbook Deadline EXTENDED
The yearbook deadline has been extended. The FINAL day to order yearbooks is Monday, January 27th. Order online before Monday if you would like a yearbook for the 2019-2020 school year. 

Spring Creek BBQ Spirit Night
Mark your calendars to join us in a few weeks at Spring Creek BBQ for our TCE Spirit Night. A portion of the proceeds will benefit TCE, and some of our TCE staff will serve as guest hosts for the evening. The three classes with the most participants will each receive a keychain, $10 gift card, and a Spring Creek BBQ shirt which will get you free ice cream anytime you wear it to Spring Creek BBQ. We hope to see you all there!

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will generate and solve problems situations for a given mathematical number sentence involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers within 1,000.

Language Arts: In reading, learners will compare books and notice when authors play with words. In writing, learners will continue to write poems and work on writing their own comparisons. In grammar, learners will practice capitalizing names.
Science: In science, learners will take the weather information they have gathered from their weather research and graph to see patterns in the weather of two different cities.

Social Studies: In social studies, learners will continue studying maps and symbols.

January 28th - February 1st

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will begin to represent numbers up to 1,200 in standard, expanded and word forms.

If you are looking for resources to support and review with your child at home in practicing addition and subtraction problems, please click here to find a folder of practice problems to print for home. Videos for the different strategies taught in class can be found here. Please check out Greg Tang Math for a word problem generator to support your child with addition and subtraction word problems at home. We are working with numbers from 1-1,000. 

Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will look at Author's Purpose and continue with playful language. In writing workshop, learners will begin opinion/persuasive writing. They will also practice spelling words that contain oa/ow patterns, and continue with cursive handwriting.

Science: In science this week, learners will continue to measure, record, and graph weather information. Our focus has been on wind conditions with fun experiments from resources such as Mystery Science. We will continue taking a deeper look at cloud coverage and precipitation.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will be able to research a historical figure who has shown good citizenship and present their findings.

Spring Creek BBQ Spirit Night
Mark Your Calendars! We will have our annual Lewisville Spring Creek Barbecue Spirit Night Monday, January 28th from 5-9PM. Come join us for fabulous food and scoializing with all your favorite TCE friends and teachers. Spring Creek with donate 20% of all the evening's proceeds to our school. Also, the class with the best attendance will win a special prize!

Second Grade Field Trip - Crayola Experience
On Friday, January 18th, your child brought home a letter and permission slip for our second grade field trip. We will be going to the Crayola Experience in Plano, Texas on Thursday April 4th for our second-grade field trip. The cost of the field trip is $16 including Crayola admission and bus transportation. The permission slip (see below) need to be signed and returned with cash or check (made out to TCE) by Friday, February 8th. All parts of the permission slip need to be filled out in order for your child to participate in our field trip.

If you would like to chaperone, please contact your child's homeroom teacher. The cost of a chaperone's admission to the Crayola Experience is $10. You must email your child's teacher and send in your chaperone admission money by Friday, February 8th. You will need to take your own car or carpool with other second grade parents. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher!


Six Flags Read To Succeed
Your learner should have come home with a letter and reading log for the Six Flags Read To Succeed program. If your child reads 6 hours (360 minutes) and logs their reading (with a parent signature), they will earn a free ticket to Six Flags. This reading log is due back by February 19th to earn the Six Flags ticket. Reading done for your child's RED folder may also be recorded on their Six Flags reading log.

January 21st - 25th

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers up to 1,200 in more than one way as a sum of so many thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.

Please check out Greg Tang Math for a word problem generator to support your child with addition and subtraction at home. We are working with numbers from 1-1,000. 

School Kit Math is a free app for tablets that your child may utilize at home. The tools include: numbers lines, 100's charts, tens frames, and many other digital forms of math manipualtives we use in class during the day. 

Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will look at playful literary language. In writing workshop, learners will take their mid-year writing assessment. They will also practice spelling words that contain oi/oy patterns, and continue with cursive handwriting.

RED reading folders are due Friday, January 25th.

No School - Monday, January 21st
All CISD offices and campuses will be closed, Monday, January 21st in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We look forward to seeing all our smiling second grade friends at 7:30 on Tuesday, January 22nd! 

Holiday Coupon - January
Second grade will celebrate our January holiday coupon, pajama day, on Thursday, January 24th. Please make sure your child wears appropriate shoes and brings a coat if the weather permits. If it is not wet/rainy and the temperature is above freezing, we will still participate in outdoor recess.

We love connecting with our second grade families and being available to answer any questions or concerns you have. If you need to contact a second grade teacher, please use one of the options below.

CISD Email: Email is the quickest and easiest way to contact your child's second grade teacher. Email is checked periodically throughout the day; time sensitive messages should be left at the front office.

CISD Phones: Our classroom phones do not push through phone calls from outside the school during the day, however you may call the number listed on our TCE website and leave a message. For more time sensitive manner, please contact the front office. They are able to relay messages to educators during the day.

In Person Conferences: Our second grade conference period is from 2:10-3:00 each day. Please contact your homeroom teacher through email or phone to set up a conference time, if needed.

January 14th-18th

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will finish addition and subtraction with 3-digit numbers up to 1,000. Learners will apply addition and subtractions strategies to solve word problems and generate word problems based on a given number sentence.

In writing workshop, learners will continue writing friendly letters. They will also practice spelling words that contain ai/ay patterns, continue with Weighty Words, and begin cursive handwriting.

Science: In science this week, learners will continue to recognize patterns in the natural world and amount objects in the sky.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify characteristics of a good citizen and historical figures that portray these characteristics.

Yearbooks on Sale - ONE WEEK LEFT!
It's that time of year to purchase a yearbook for your child. Yearbook cost was not part of the Trailpass this year, so the only way to purchase is through Balfour.com at a cost of $25. 

You can purchase an ad to appear in the yearbook to make this year extra special. Optional ads come in multiple sizes ranging from $15-$120. 

We sold out the last couple of years, so don't miss out! Yearbook sales end January 18, 2019. Extra yearbooks will NOT be purchased and sold in the office at the end of the year. 

Report Cards
Friday, January 11th, your child brought home their report card for the first nine weeks of school. If you would like more clarification for what each standard means and what it looks like for your child to met standard, approach standard, and make insignificant progress towards standard please check out the CISD standards-based report card rubrics found here. Please note that every nine weeks the same standard may be reported on but the rigor and expectations increase from nine weeks to nine weeks. Please reach out to your child's teacher(s) if you have any questions or would like clarification regarding their report card.
