Throughout the week our learners at TCE work hard at going above and beyond! When any teacher catches them standing out in a positive way they are awarded a Terrific Texan. At the end of the week, there is a school-wide drawing and 3 winners are chosen from each grade level.

STEAM Night - February 26th

A Note from Coach Hayes: 21 Day Snack Challenge

Registration is now open for the 21 Day Snack Challenge. Families can register through February 29th which is also the start date of the Challenge. Kiddos participating in 21-Day Snack challenge will make a commitment to eat 1 healthy snack for 21 straight days. The CISD school with the most kiddos registered and completed surveys at the end of the challenge will receive additional resources for the PE department. Register at https://kids-teaching-kids.com/. Any class with 100% registration will receive extra PE time playing 9-Square in the Air.

We have some exciting news in second grade! We are going on a FIELD TRIP to KidZania on Thursday, March 28th. While at KidZania we will explore immersive, hands-on, real-world jobs. Second grade LOVED this field trip last year and we’re excited to get to go again!! 

Thursday, January 25th, your child brought home a permission slip and letter outlining our field trip, including the cost and due date (March 1st). Due to KidZania policies restricting chaperone numbers, we will not take any parent chaperones on this field trip. Additional TCE teachers will join us to ensure all our learners' safety. KidZania is closed to outside guests on field trip days. This ensures the safety of all students and prohibits anyone from purchasing a ticket and entering as an outside guest. Please let us know if you have any questions. 

Tennis Shoes for PE & Extended Specials Day (CTT)

Second-grade specials are split into color houses. Red folders have a schedule of your child's color house specials rotation. Please help ensure your child wears appropriate shoes on PE days and Move & Groove (Fridays). Additionally, every other Tuesday second grade has extended specials during CTT. The dates are outlined for the remainder of the year below. Thank you for your help in making sure your child is safely dressed for the gym!

iPad Reminders
We use our iPads at some point each day as an important learning tool in the classroom. Please help us in making sure that your child's iPad is charged each night to 100%! We understand that life happens; if your child does not charge their iPad, please send their charger with them to school. We do not have additional chargers in the classroom.

Our yearbook sale is now open! Each year we have a Town Center Yearbook that highlights photos from every class, school events, and staff. It is a great item to look back on memories from the year, and we even have a yearbook signing party in May. If you want to purchase a yearbook, please see the graphic below for the different options. As a reminder, the TCE Yearbook cost WAS NOT included in the TCE Trail Pass. If you would like a yearbook for your child(ren), purchase it using the website link below.

Our yearbook committee would also love your help submitting photos for the yearbook. If you have any photos you would like to share as you attend campus events, see below for information on uploading them to our committee.

What are we learning?

Math Workshop - In Math, learners will model, create, and describe contextual division situations in which a group of concrete objects are divided into equivalent sets. Learners will listen to a division situation read aloud and create a corresponding model.

Reading Workshop - In Reading, learners will analyze characters using the mentor text Each Kindness. They will also participate in a Junior Great Books reading of The Blue Moose and engage in activities and discussions that accompany the text.  

Each Thursday we go to the library to read. Make sure to bring your books back so you can return and check out new books each week! 

Writing Workshop- In writing, learners will write letters about different parts of the books they are reading in book club.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, learners will identify ways to conserve and replenish Earth’s resources.

Science - In Science, learners will identify the parts of a variety of animals and describe the purpose they serve.

Smart Watches

We have noticed that more and more of our students have begun wearing smartwatches to school, so we want to be clear about expectations for those devices. 

Students are not permitted to communicate on their personal devices during the school day. (The same rule applies to their iPads.) This includes parents. Additionally, smartwatches are only to be used to tell time during the day. Please help us in reinforcing this expectation.  If you need to contact your son/daughter during the day, please email your child's teacher or call the front office. 

We have talked about these expectations with the students. We've let them know that if they are using their smart watch, cell phone, or other personal devices to communicate (or use any additional feature beyond telling time), they will receive one warning. After that one warning, we will ask for those devices to stay at home.

Valentine's Day Party

Our class Valentine's Day party will be on Wednesday, February 14th at 2:00 p.m. Please have your child address a Valentine's card to each child in their homeroom. The names of students in the class were sent home on Tuesday, January 30th. Please reach out to your homeroom teacher if you need a new list. You may attach a small treat to the card (if you would like) but please make sure all treats are peanut/tree nut-free. Please have them bring cards with them to school on or before Wednesday, February 14th. 

Parents are welcome to join us on the day of the party. The part in each classroom will be run by the room parents. If you plan on attending, you will need to check in at the front office using your ID. All grade-level parties will be happening at 2:00 so please plan accordingly for parking/check-in.

PTO Valentine's Dance - Friday, February 9th

PTO is hosting a Family Valentine's Dance on February 9th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the TCE gym. Families can purchase tickets through February 4th, using the link below. Tickets include a dessert, a drink, and a favor from the PTO.

What are we learning?

Math Workshop - In Math, learners will generate a number that is greater than or less than a given whole number up to 1,200. Learners can compare and order whole numbers up to 1,200 using comparative language, numbers, and the symbols >,<, or =. Learners can compare two numbers using comparative language, vertebrally to a classmate.

Reading Workshop - In Reading, learners will understand and apply how to make an inference and use schema using the mentor text Robots in Love. 

Don’t forget your library books! Each Thursday we go to the library to read. Make sure to bring your books back so you can return and check out new books each week! 

Writing Workshop- In writing, learners will finish up poetry with writing poems using different structures.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, learners will understand the physical characteristics of our world, including significant landforms and bodies of water, and apply this learning by creating maps.

Science - In Science, learners will measure, record, and graph weather information regarding weather, including cloud coverage, and identify the importance of weather and season information to make choices in clothing and activities.
