December 17th - 21st

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will review adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers within 1,000. Learners will begin to apply addition and subtractions strategies to solve word problems.

Please check out Greg Tang Math for a word problem generator to support your child with addition and subtraction at home. We are working with numbers from 1-1,000. 

Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will be reviewing skills in both grammar and reading. In writing workshop, learners will be the finishing touches on their holiday tradition writing and have some fun holiday prompts.

**Important note: the RED reading folder was scheduled to be due Friday, December 21st. PLEASE do not send them on this date! We will resume with the RED folders in January, with the next due date being Friday, January 25th. Enjoy the gift of extra reading time! :)

Science: In science this week, learners will participate in holiday STEM science experiments.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will present on their winter holidays and traditions celebrated at home in December.

Jingle Bell Jog
Due to weather, our Jingle Bell Jog has been postponed. 2C & 2D is rescheduled for specials (2:05) on Monday, December 17th. 2A & 2B is rescheduled for specials (2:05) on Tuesday, December 18th. 2E will participate in the Jingle Bell Jog with their specials rotation. We would love to see you there!

What: Town Center first graders are collecting new, unwrapped toys for children in need in Coppell. We will be donating the toys to the Coppell Lions Club. When you place your toy under the Christmas Tree, please sign your name on an ornament and hang it on the tree!
Where: Place new, unwrapped toys under the Christmas tree by the front office. Thank you!!

Yearbooks on Sale NOW
It's that time of year to purchase a yearbook for your child. Yearbook cost was not part of the Trailpass this year, so the only way to purchase is through Balfour.com at a cost of $25. 

You can purchase an ad to appear in the yearbook to make this year extra special. Optional ads come in multiple sizes ranging from $15-$120. 

We sold out the last couple of years, so don't miss out! Yearbook sales end January 18, 2019. Extra yearbooks will NOT be purchased and sold in the office at the end of the year. 

Six Flags Read To Succeed
Your learner should have come home with a letter and reading log for the Six Flags Read To Succeed program. If your child reads 6 hours (360 minutes) and logs their reading (with a parent signature), they will earn a free ticket to Six Flags. This reading log is due back by February 19th to earn the Six Flags ticket. Reading done for your child's RED folder may also be recorded on their Six Flags reading log.

December 10th - 14th

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will continue to apply their knowledge of addition and subtraction with 2-digit numbers to adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers within 1,000. Learners will review mental strategies and algorithms based on knowledge of place value and properties of operations within 2-digit numbers to apply to subtraction with 3-digits.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will continue their understanding of nonfiction texts by learning how to identify the main idea of their book. They will also learn how to find details that support their main idea. In writing workshop, learners will begin publishing their nonfiction wiring using online presentation tools. Learners will also be able to recognize and use verbs (past and present) in their writing.

Science: In science this week, learners will know that the natural world includes earth materials (rocks, water, and natural/manmade resources).

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will continue learning about winter holidays specific to different countries around the world. They will learn about their traditions, food, greetings, etc.

Please see announcement below about traditions (holidays around the world) project. Projects are due by Friday, December 14th.

Our current unit, Holidays Around the World involves the different customs and traditions of various December holidays. In connection with this, each student will need to choose a special custom or tradition they do during December to share with the class. They will need to teach the class about their tradition or custom through a presentation. Be sure to include visuals to go with it. Be creative! Presentations may be done on paper, poster board, Google slides, iMovie, PowToon, Adboe Spark, or any other digital presentation tool (2-3 minute limit). 

Each student will get to present his/her project to the class during the last week in December before we are out for Winter Break. Your child's project is due on December 14th.

November 26th - 30th

Happy Thanksgiving Break! 


What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will generate a number that is greater than or less than a given whole number up 1,000. Learners will also use place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 1,000 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols (>, <, or =).

Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will continue their understanding of nonfiction texts by adding information to what they already know. They will use nonfiction books to gather and recall new information. In writing workshop, learners will begin expository writing by collecting keywords and building them into paragraphs about a topic of their choice. Learners will also be able to recognize and use adverbs (that tell when) in their writing.

R.E.D. folders are due Friday, November 30th. 

Science: In science this week, learners will know that the natural world includes earth materials (rocks, water, and natural/manmade resources).

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will explore the significance of different ethnic or cultural celebrations. Please see announcement below about upcoming traditions (holidays around the world) project.

November 12th - 16th

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will use standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 1,000.


Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will expand on their understanding of nonfiction texts by comparing 2 books on the same topic. They will use text features such as the Table of Contents, Keywords, and Glossaries to help in their comparisons. In writing workshop, learners will edit a writing using the COPS formula (Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling). Learners will also be able to recognize and use adverbs in their writing.

Science: In science this week, learners will be using the rocks they brought in from home to observe, describe, and compare rocks by size, texture, and color.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will discuss and explore cultures within their class and their community.

Wednesday, November 14th
On Wednesday, November 14th, the second-grade teachers will be participating in a design day on campus. There will be substitutes in the second-grade classrooms. If you need to get a message to your child, or there is a change is plans for pick-up, please contact the front office (214-469-7800) and they will pass along to your child.

Turkey Trot
Our TCE Turkey Trot will take place on Friday, November 16th during specials. Second grade has specials from 2:10-3:00 on Fridays.

Math: In math this week, learners will use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers up to 1,000 in more than one way as a sum of so many thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue growing our knowledge with nonfiction texts. We will continue to explore "what is this book teaching me?" and how to clarify keywords within the text. In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives using a variety of creative writing tools.

Science: In science this week, learners will identify and compare the properties of natural sources with rocks and minerals outside while observing weather patterns in the sky.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners wrap up how science and technology has improved the way our basic needs are met.

Veteran's Day Program
TCE will honor our veterans with a program at 9:00 am on November 9th. We would like to extend an invitation to you and any veterans you know, to attend our Veterans Day Ceremony. We will have light refreshments in our lounge before and after the program for veterans and their families. If you are attending, we ask that you check into the front office by 8:45 the morning of Friday, November 9th.

Turkey Trot

Storybook Pumpkin Patch
The Town Center Elementary Library will host a Storybook Pumpkin Patch for any TCE students that would like to participate. At home, students and/or families can decorate a pumpkin to look like one of their favorite children's book characters. Students may bring their decorated pumpkin to the TCE Library 7:30-8:00am on Monday or Tuesday morning, October 29-30, 2018. The pumpkins will be on display for viewing Monday, October 29th - Thursday, November 1st. Pumpkins must be removed from the library by 3pm on Friday, November 2nd. Snacks
Please remember that second grade has a snack each morning, as it is a long day for our learners. Many learners are coming to school each day without a snack and expecting one from their teacher. Teachers are unable to pass out snacks to learners due to allergies and food restrictions. Please send a small, healthy snack for your learner each morning does not require a fork or spoon to eat or contains peanuts/tree nuts. Please see below for examples of a healthy snack for learning.

Dear Parents,

This week we will begin a study about rocks. For one of our first activities, we will be learning how rocks are alike and how they are different. In order to do this, we will be sorting rocks by color, texture, size, etc. Please help your child find three rocks, put them in a Ziploc bag, and return them to school by Friday, October 26th. It would be best if each of these rocks were different from each other in some way, for example, different size, shape, color, etc. You are also welcome to send in a small rock or mineral collection if you have one from home. 

Thank you for helping your child find their rocks for this sorting activity!

Red Ribbon Week
Our TCE student council has come up with some amazing theme days to celebrate Red Ribbon Week THIS week October 22nd - 26th.


Report Cards
Friday, October 19th, your child brought home their report card for the first nine weeks of school. If you would like more clarification for what each standard means and what it looks like for your child to met standard, approach standard, and make insignificant progress towards standard please check out the CISD standards-based report card rubrics found here. Please note that every nine weeks the same standard may be reported on but the rigor and expectations increase from nine weeks to nine weeks. Please reach out to your child's teacher(s) if you have any questions or would like clarification regarding their report card. 

Storybook Pumpkin Patch

Math: In math this week, learners will apply their knowledge and skills in solving addition and subtraction problems with two-digits to solve one and two-step word problems. Learners will use strip diagrams to represent word problems.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will begin to look at nonfiction texts and how to pay attention to details. In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. In grammar, we will look at adjectives.

Science: In science this week, learners will finish observing the motion of objects exploring through wind-up toys.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will create timelines of their own lives and study the history of Coppell incorporating timelines.

Metrocrest Food Drive
Our TCE student council is partnering with Metrocrest Services to provide food donations for our local families and senior citizens. The food drive will run October 9th - 19th. Student council will have boxes at the end of each downstairs hallway that learners can place their donations in. This food drive will be in place of the food drive that has traditionally taken place during the week before Thanksgiving.
