December 10th - 14th

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will continue to apply their knowledge of addition and subtraction with 2-digit numbers to adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers within 1,000. Learners will review mental strategies and algorithms based on knowledge of place value and properties of operations within 2-digit numbers to apply to subtraction with 3-digits.

Please to check out Greg Tang Math for a word problem generator to support your child with addition and subtraction at home. We are working with numbers from 1-1,000.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will continue their understanding of nonfiction texts by learning how to identify the main idea of their book. They will also learn how to find details that support their main idea. In writing workshop, learners will begin publishing their nonfiction wiring using online presentation tools. Learners will also be able to recognize and use verbs (past and present) in their writing.

Science: In science this week, learners will know that the natural world includes earth materials (rocks, water, and natural/manmade resources).

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will continue learning about winter holidays specific to different countries around the world. They will learn about their traditions, food, greetings, etc.

Please see announcement below about traditions (holidays around the world) project. Projects are due by Friday, December 14th.

Announcements

Parent Newsletter
Ms. Martin sends out a parent newsletter each week with many important announcements about TCE. Click here to check out this weeks newsletter.

Holidays Around the World
Our current unit, Holidays Around the World involves the different customs and traditions of various December holidays. In connection with this, each student will need to choose a special custom or tradition they do during December to share with the class. They will need to teach the class about their tradition or custom through a presentation. Be sure to include visuals to go with it. Be creative! Presentations may be done on paper, poster board, Google slides, iMovie, PowToon, Adboe Spark, or any other digital presentation tool (2-3 minute limit).

Each student will get to present his/her project to the class during the last week in December before we are out for Winter Break. Your child's project is due on December 14th.

TCE Giving Tree
When: December 3rd - December 19th
What: Town Center first graders are collecting new, unwrapped toys for children in need in Coppell. We will be donating the toys to the Coppell Lions Club. When you place your toy under the Christmas Tree, please sign your name on an ornament and hang it on the tree!
Where: Place new, unwrapped toys under the Christmas tree by the front office. Thank you!!

TCE Jingle Bell Jog
Our TCE Jingle Bell Jog will take place on Friday, December 14th during specials. Second grade will be outside on the track at 2:10. We would love to see you there!

Yearbooks on Sale NOW
It's that time of year to purchase a yearbook for your child. Yearbook cost was not part of the Trailpass this year, so the only way to purchase is through Balfour.com at a cost of $25.

You can purchase an ad to appear in the yearbook to make this year extra special. Optional ads come in multiple sizes ranging from $15-$120.

We sold out the last couple of years, so don't miss out! Yearbook sales end January 18, 2019. Extra yearbooks will NOT be purchased and sold in the office at the end of the year.
