Map Testing
CISD is conducting the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test. This assessment will help measure growth and skill mastery for learners kindergarten-9th grade. Both in-person and distance TCE 2nd graders will be taking this assessment next week. The assessment will take place on Monday, September 28th, and Tuesday, September 29th first thing in the morning.

Families learning virtually you should have received an email by the end of Friday, September 25th with information regarding the testing days. Please read through this email thoroughly and reach out to your homeroom teacher if you have any questions prior to testing Monday morning.

Face to face families we ask that you make sure your child is on time and has their iPad FULLY charged on Monday and Tuesday. This will help to make sure they are set up for success during their MAP assessment.

Week at a Glance
As our second graders have become experts within Schoology, we are going to move our week at a glance to be a visual schedule tool. It can still be accessed (linked here) but will no longer be updated weekly with live times for all core content areas. We will continue to use the Schoology calendar for all LIVE times.

What are we learning?

Math: This week learners will determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar. They will use the cent symbol, dollar sign, and the decimal point to name the value of a collection of coins.

Language Arts: In Reading Workshop this week we are revisiting Metacognition and strategies that help us be stronger readers. We are reading Those Darn Squirrels! by Adam Rubin and discussing authors' intentions. We will be predicting and retelling to check our comprehension. In Writing Workshop we are reviewing Small Moment writing and working towards our first "published" piece of the year. We will also begin Grammar Talks with a focus on nouns.

Science: This week learners will utilize their knowledge of how different objects combined together can do things they cannot do by themselves. Learners will be given a problem involving physical objects, then design a solution that involves an experiment to test and gather data.

Social Studies: In Social Studies this week we are wrapping up our Historical Figures unit and completing our researching journals and will being our next unit on Government. We will also explore American Indian Heritage Day on Friday.

Schoology Weekly Checksheet
Based on feedback received from second grade parents, we have created a Schoology Assignment Weekly Checklist to help support your child's learning at home. Each week there will be an updated tab at the bottom with each of the tasks/assignments that need to be completed throughout the week. If you would like to make a digital copy of the checklist, you may do so by clicking here.

As a reminder, all assignments for the entire week will be posted in Schoology at 8 a.m. on Monday mornings to allow for you to spread out throughout the week/weekend as your family sees the best fit. Each week the objectives for the upcoming week are published to the blog. We realize that each family has its own unique circumstances during this time and we want to support you as best we can. There is a schedule linked in Schoology each week as an option but this is just one option in how to spread out the workload throughout the week/weekend.

Please do not forget the following digital learning expectations below each week for iStation,  DreamBox, Reflex Math, and Imagine Learning.

iStation

Because it is the beginning of the month, learners will need to complete their ISIP assessment on iStation this week. All they will need to do is log onto iStation and click "Reading with ISIP" on that day and it will automatically take them to the assessment. It should take anywhere from 20-45 minutes approximately. Please make sure they are not receiving assistance while they are taking the assessment as we use the data results to help us design instruction. They will know the assessment is complete when the blue rectangle box on the bottom right-hand side of the screen goes away. If you have any questions regarding iStation, feel free to reach out to Mrs. Judd or Ms. McGraw.

DreamBox

As a reminder, learners are required to complete at least 5 lessons on DreamBox each week. These can be completed all at once or spread out throughout the week as your family sees the best fit. We ask that learners complete any assigned lesson (marked with a blue calendar) before picking which lesson they would like to complete. To view their lessons completed each week, learners can click on the image of their avatar in the top-left corner of the screen.

Reflex Math
Each learner is required each week to work on Reflex Math three times a week for approximately 15-20 minutes. Our goal is for learners to earn a green light 3 times a week. Although the Green Light depends on students correctly answering facts, not time used, students can typically get the Green Light in 15 minutes of concentrated use. Read here to learn more about how to help your child successfully achieve a green light three times a week.

Imagine Learning
Imagine Learning is a program used with select EL learners. If your child had Imagine Learning login information on their login sheet, we ask that they are using for approximately 20-30 minutes daily (Monday-Friday). Please make sure that your child is finishing their lesson before logging out. If a learner logs out before their lesson is complete, they will have to start it over upon their next login.

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, I can use concrete models of square units to find the area of a rectangle by covering it with no gaps or overlaps, counting to find the total number of square units, and describing the measurement using a number and the unit.
C-Measurement: FE 2nd Grade Team

Language Arts: In reading this week I can use evidence to make inferences. In writing this week, I can edit and revise my writing.

Science: In science this week, I can observe, record, and compare how physical characteristics and behaviors of animals help them meet their basic needs.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, I can trace the development of a product from a natural source to a finished product through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Where do the products come from?
