Parent Newsletter



Supply Pick-up for Virtual Learners
We will have supply pick up on Wednesday, October 21st for virtual learners only in the FRONT car loop from 8:00-9:00 AM. These are FREE supplies that your child will need to pick up in order to complete the work in their Schoology courses during the second nine weeks. Grades K, 2, 3, 4, 5 will all have items to be picked up. Second graders will receive their Go Math workbooks, a whiteboard, dry erase marker & eraser, an iPad stylus, and an information writing rubric. 


St. Ann's Thanksgiving Baskets
Every year St. Ann's Catholic Church in Coppell provides Thanksgiving baskets with supplies to cook a turkey dinner for those in need. If you could benefit from this assistance, please click on the link below and fill out the Google form as accurately as possible. By completing this form you understand this information will be shared with St. Ann's Catholic Church for distribution of your basket. Please fill out this form no later than October 20th, 2020. Thank you! 


Daily Reminders for Virtual Students:
-Please remember that all work must be completed on the day it was assigned prior to 11:59 p.m. to receive credit.
-Please be sure your child is participating in the specials courses as well as the core subject areas!


Daily Reminders of Face to Face Students:
-Please send your iPad to school each day FULLY charged!
-Please remember a snack and a full water bottle each day!
-Please put names in jackets and sweaters as the weather fluctuates throughout the day!


Report Cards
If you would like more clarification for what each standard means and what it looks like for your child to met standard, approach standard, and make insignificant progress towards standard please check out the CISD standards-based report card rubrics found here. Please note that every nine weeks the same standard may be reported on but the rigor and expectations increase from nine weeks to nine weeks. Please reach out to your child's teacher(s) if you have any questions or would like clarification regarding their report card. 


Zoom
All learners need to update their student iPads to the latest IOS 14. Please go under settings and software to see available updates. This will need to be done by October 14th. If the update is not completed by October 19th the device will lockdown until it is updated! 

Also, all students need to complete the Zoom Sign-on ASAP. CISD is updating and changing zoom settings so your child will no longer be able to login to our class zoom meetings without being signed in. Please see step by step instructions below. 
 


Zoom Expectations
Please take some time to review Zoom Expectations with your child. All students both virtual and F2F students are participating in some zooms and we have really been working on using our best manners on zoom! This will help everyone have a great learning experience! Thank you!! Learners will great zoom expectations have been earning their houses lots of points!!!



What are we learning?

Math: This week learners will continue to add and subtract two-digit numbers using mental strategies and algorithms. Learners will apply their knowledge of addition and subtraction strategies to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction within 100.


Language Arts: In Reading Workshop we will continue with our unit in nonfiction. Readers will learn how to figure out what keywords mean, and also explore how to grow knowledge across books. Please remember to keep up with your weekly iStation requirement and your Reading Logs!

In Writing Workshop we will add more details to better describe our books!!


Science: This week learners will trace and compare patterns in movement such as sliding, spinning, and rolling. Learners will make predictions about the way an object will move based on their physical properties. 


Social Studies: In Social Studies we will take a look at timelines. We will begin by building a timeline of our own life, and then create a timeline of our life, and then create a timeline of the history of Coppell.

Parent Newsletter
Ms. Martin shares out our campus newsletter via email each Friday. Make sure to read her newsletter for information regarding campus news. This week's newsletter can be found linked here.

Parent Book Club
Our counselor and librarian will be facilitating a parent book club this Spring in the Town Center library, and we would love for you to attend! It will be a great time to get to know and collaborate with other parents. The book study will start towards the end of March and go through April. It will be a total of five sessions, with each session lasting one hour. All participants will receive a free copy of the book, and it will be yours to keep. If you are interested in attending/learning more, fill out the link below. This will help our facilitators pick the day that works best for everyone and gauge interest in the book club.

Second Grade Field Trip
We are grateful for the many second grade parents willing to chaperone our second-grade field trip to the Perot Museum on Thursday, April 30th. Please remember that you must have a CISD background check for the 2019-2020 school year on file in order to attend. You may create an account and fill out a background request by visiting the CISD website volunteering page. If you are unsure if you have a background check on file, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher.

Multiplication and Division Practice
Our second-grade mathematicians have just finished up their first unit showing a basic understanding of the foundations of multiplication and division by modeling, creating, and describing contextual multiplication and division situations. If you are looking for resources to support this learning at home we have gathered resources that may be found linked here.

Miss McGraw
Our wonderful second-grade teacher, Ms. McGraw, is getting married over spring break! She will be out of the classroom March 16th-20th. If you are a 2A/2B parent, you may contact Mrs. Bowman (abowman@coppellisd.com) if you need something addressed during this time. Any message that is time-sensitive that may need to be passed along to your child can be relayed to the front office. Best wishes to Ms. McGraw on her special day and we look forward to her return, March 23rd!

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners begin to classify 2D and 3D shapes based on attributes and use written and oral language to justify the classification. Learners create 2D shapes with specific attributes. Learners compose 2D and 3D shapes and decompose 2D shapes.

Language Arts: In reading, learners will be practicing sequencing stories as well as visualization. In writing, learners will use graphic organizers to practice writing opinion pieces of writing. In grammar, learners will continue to practice spelling words with the long vowel sounds.

Science: In science, learners observe, describe, and compare rocks by size, texture, and color.

As we begin our study about rocks, we will be learning how rocks are alike and how they are different. In order to do this, we will be sorting rocks by color, texture, size, etc. Please help your child find three rocks, put them in a Ziploc bag, and return them to school by Tuesday, March 17th. IT would be best if each of these rocks were different from each other in some way. For example different sizes, shapes, colors, etc. You are welcome t send in a small rock or mineral collection if you have one. Thank you for helping your child find their rocks for this sorting activity!

January 14th-18th

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will finish addition and subtraction with 3-digit numbers up to 1,000. Learners will apply addition and subtractions strategies to solve word problems and generate word problems based on a given number sentence.

If you are looking for additional resources to support your child in practicing addition and subtraction problems at home, please click here to find a folder of practice problems to print for home. Videos for the different strategies taught in class can be found here. 

Please check out Greg Tang Math for a word problem generator to support your child with addition and subtraction at home. We are working with numbers from 1-1,000. 

School Kit Math is a free app for tablets that your child may utilize at home. The tools include: numbers lines, 100's charts, tens frames, and many other digital forms of math manipualtives we use in class during the day. 

Reading: In reading workshop this week, learners will continue with reading fluency in order to improve reading and comprehension skills. In writing workshop, learners will continue writing friendly letters. They will also practice spelling words that contain ai/ay patterns, continue with Weighty Words, and begin cursive handwriting.

Science: In science this week, learners will continue to recognize patterns in the natural world and amount objects in the sky.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify characteristics of a good citizen and historical figures that portray these characteristics.

Yearbooks on Sale - ONE WEEK LEFT!
It's that time of year to purchase a yearbook for your child. Yearbook cost was not part of the Trailpass this year, so the only way to purchase is through Balfour.com at a cost of $25. 

You can purchase an ad to appear in the yearbook to make this year extra special. Optional ads come in multiple sizes ranging from $15-$120. 

We sold out the last couple of years, so don't miss out! Yearbook sales end January 18, 2019. Extra yearbooks will NOT be purchased and sold in the office at the end of the year.

Spring Creek BBQ Spirit Night
Mark Your Calendars! We will have our annual Lewisville Spring Creek Barbecue Spirit Night Monday, January 28th from 5-9PM. Come join us for fabulous food and scoializing with all your favorite TCE friends and teachers. Spring Creek with donate 20% of all the evening's proceeds to our school. Also, the class with the best attendance will win a special prize!

Contact Information
We love connecting with our second grade families and being available to answer any questions or concerns you have. If you need to contact a second grade teacher, please use one of the options below.

CISD Email: Email is the quickest and easiest way to contact your child's second grade teacher. Email is checked periodically throughout the day; time sensitive messages should be left at the front office.

CISD Phones: Our classroom phones do not push through phone calls from outside the school during the day, however you may call the number listed on our TCE website and leave a message. For more time sensitive manner, please contact the front office. They are able to relay messages to educators during the day.

In Person Conferences: Our second grade conference period is from 2:10-3:00 each day. Please contact your homeroom teacher through email or phone to set up a conference time, if needed.

Six Flags Read To Succeed
Your learner should have come home with a letter and reading log for the Six Flags Read To Succeed program. If your child reads 6 hours (360 minutes) and logs their reading (with a parent signature), they will earn a free ticket to Six Flags. This reading log is due back by February 19th to earn the Six Flags ticket. Reading done for your child's RED folder may also be recorded on their Six Flags reading log.

October 22nd - 26th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will begin to determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar. Learners will then use the cent symbol, dollar sign, and decimal point to the name the written value of a collection of coins.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue growing our knowledge with nonfiction texts. We will explore "what is this book teaching me?" and how to clarify keywords within the text. I writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives using a variety of creative writing tools.

The R.E.D. reading folder is due on Friday, October 26th. Please make sure that the log is completely filled out including a parent signature!

Science: In science this week, learners will begin studying earth materials from our natural world.

In order to do this, we will be sorting rocks by color, texture, size, etc. Please help your child find three rocks, put them in a Ziploc bag, and return them to school by Friday, October 26th. It would be best if each of these rocks were different from each other in some way, for example, different size, shape, color, etc. You are also welcome to send in a small rock or mineral collection if you have one from home.

Red Ribbon Week
Our TCE student council has come up with some amazing theme days to celebrate Red Ribbon Week THIS week October 22nd - 26th.


Report Cards

Storybook Pumpkin Patch
The Town Center Elementary Library will host a Storybook Pumpkin Patch for any TCE students that would like to participate. At home, students and/or families can decorate a pumpkin to look like one of their favorite children's book characters. Students may bring their decorated pumpkin to the TCE Library 7:30-8:00am on Monday or Tuesday morning, October 29-30, 2018. The pumpkins will be on display for viewing Monday, October 29th - Thursdday, November 1st. Pumpkins must be removed from the library by 3pm on Friday, November 2nd. Snacks
Please remember that second grade has a snack each morning, as it is a long day for our learners. Many learners are coming to school each day without a snack and expecting one from their teacher. Teachers are unable to pass out snacks to learners due to allergies and food restrictions. Please send a small, healthy snack for your learner each morning does not require a fork or spoon to eat or contains peanuts/tree nuts. Please see below for examples of a healthy snack for learning. 

PTO Family Movie Night
Join us in the gym on Friday, October 26th at 6pm. Dinner, drink, and snacks will be sold starting at 6pm while supplies last. All dinner and concession items sold will benefit our PTO. Pre-register online at www.tcepto.com to guarantee your dinner and preferred choice.
