2nd Grade Announcements

  • 2nd Grade Music Program - Please save the date for Thursday, February 23rd at 5:30 PM. Town Center 2nd Graders will be performing songs with the story "The Day The Crayons Quit" in the TCE cafeteria stage. They have already started practicing during music class! Your child has brought home a letter with details about the program. Your child will wear the color of their crayon hat (they know their color) for the performance. 

  • Yearbook Photos  - TCE PTO is looking for your help in gathering photos for the Town Center Yearbook! They've set up an easy process for you to share your images from different campus or classroom events. We would love for all families to contribute their images so we can make sure we have equal representation from all grade levels and classrooms! Please use the following step-by-step directions to document or video to create a Lifetouch account and begin uploading your images now. Thank you!


What are we learning?

Math Workshop - In Math this week, learners will model, create, and describe contextual multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of concrete objects are joined. Learners can listen to a multiplication situation read aloud and create a corresponding model. 


Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop this week, learners will continue reading in their book clubs, culminating in our Camp Read Aloud on Friday. Learners will be able to bring blankets and pillows to read around our classroom that day. 

Writing Workshop- In Writing Workshop this week, learners will continue making their narrative writing longer, stronger, and better.  In Grammar, learners will explore homophones. 

Social Studies - In Social Studies this week, we will be learning about different landforms as well as starting to learn about the continents and bodies of water. 

Science - In Science this week, learners will be looking at patterns in the sky. We will be observing, recording, and describing our findings! 

We are collecting empty paper towels and toilet paper rolls for upcoming projects in science. We would love to have your recycled cardboard rolls as you use these items at home!

2nd Grade Announcements


  • "Soup"er Bowl - Second Graders at TCE is partnering with Metrocrest Services to collect canned soup in honor of the "Soup"er Bowl. Learners may bring in canned soup or goods Monday, January 30th-Friday, February 10th. Collection bins will be located in each hallway and at the front of the school. 
  • Poetry Celebration - Mark your calendars to attend our 2nd Grade Poetry Celebration that will be held on Friday, February 3rd. Please refer to the invitation for specific class times and location. We are excited to share our love of poetry with you! (2A-McKinney, 2B-Bowman, 2C-Judd)

What are we learning?

Math Workshop - In Math this week, learners will determine the number that is 10 or 100 more or 10 or 100 less than a given number up to 1,200. Learners can represent whole numbers distances from any given point on a number line. Learners will also explain to a classmate how they decided where to place a given point on a number line. Additionally, we will continue, for the remainder of the year, reviewing and refreshing our addition and subtraction skills with borrowing and regrouping, both in and out of word problems. This is one of the biggest and trickiest skills we learn in second-grade math - we've got this! 


Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop this week, learners will look at 1st and 3rd person points of view using mentor texts Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. They will also take their February iStation assessment. 

Writing Workshop- In Writing Workshop this week, learners will wrap up their poetry unit by writing a free verse poem. They have been working hard, and are SO excited to showcase their poetry with you on Friday, February 3rd. We hope that you can join us! In Grammar, learners will explore how prefixes change the meaning of words.

Social Studies - In Social Studies this week, we will be finishing a map of our "own town". We will also be starting to learn about landforms.

Math Workshop - In Math this week, learners will represent numbers up to 1,200 using standard, expanded, and word forms. Learners will also locate the position of a given number on an open number line and name a whole number that corresponds to a specific point on a number line. They will describe how they decided where to place a given whole number on an open number line. Additionally, we will continue, for the remainder of the year, reviewing and refreshing our addition and subtraction skills with borrowing and regrouping, both in and out of word problems. This is one of the biggest and trickiest skills we learn in second-grade math - we've got this! 


Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop this week, learners will use the mentor texts Snow Day and Brave Irene to explore how to create a summary using the pattern "somebody wanted but so then". They will also be comparing and contrasting the two texts. Please don't forget that we have Library Day each Thursday. 

Writing Workshop- In Writing Workshop this week, learners will continue in our poetry unit. They will take a look at how metaphors and hyperbole are used in poetry and will write cinquain, haiku, and limerick poems. In Grammar, learners will be introduced to prepositions.

Social Studies - In Social Studies this week, we will be working to create a map of our "own town". We are so excited to see everyone showcase all the map elements we have learned in their "created town".

2nd Grade Announcements

  • Family Lunch Fridays - Our campus is open each Friday for lunch visitors! When you arrive you will sign in at the front office and receive a visitor badge that must be worn at all times. You will need a photo ID (license or passport). You can eat lunch with your child at the designated tables for lunch visitors. You may only eat with your child. No other learners may be invited to eat with you. You may purchase lunch in the cafeteria or bring a lunch with you. Parents will be dismissed from the cafeteria. You will need to go back through the front office to sign out at the end of lunchtime. Please see Ms. Martin's Principal Newsletter for details on who may eat with your child and a form to fill out for non-parent lunch visitors. No lunch visitors on early release days. 
  • Background Checks - If you still need to fill out a background check please fill one out for yourself or update last year's! Click here to register as a new volunteer or confirm your information from last year. This must be completed every school year for you to volunteer at the school. The district will send you an email when your background check has cleared. Any opportunities for volunteering at the school, including holiday parties, will require a cleared background check. Once completed it lasts for the remainder of the school year.  When you create your account, make sure to click on the add new application button. (see picture below)



What are we learning?

Math Workshop - In Math this week, learners will begin our final unit on place value this year! Learners will compose and decompose numbers up to 1,200 in more than one way. Learners will also be able to listen to a number read aloud and decompose that number in more than one way. Additionally, we will continue, for the remainder of the year, reviewing and refreshing our addition and subtraction skills with borrowing and regrouping, both in and out of word problems. This is one of the biggest and trickiest skills we learn in second-grade math - we've got this! 


Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop this week, learners will begin a Junior Great Books unit on The Happy Lion.n They will be reading the story, formulating questions, and having a class discussion. 

Writing Workshop- In Writing Workshop this week, learners will continue our poetry unit. They will learn about similes and metaphors, write poems, and respond to them. In Grammar, the focus will be on contractions and compound words. 

Social Studies - In Social Studies this week, we will continue to learn about maps. We will be taking all of the information that we have learned about maps and the elements to start to plan and create a map of a town within a group. 

Science - In Science this week, learners will continue to measure, record, and graph weather. We will be learning about a meteorologist, tools they use, as well as learning a little about severe weather they report out on.
