October 22nd - 26th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, learners will begin to determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar. Learners will then use the cent symbol, dollar sign, and decimal point to the name the written value of a collection of coins.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue growing our knowledge with nonfiction texts. We will explore "what is this book teaching me?" and how to clarify keywords within the text. I writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives using a variety of creative writing tools.

The R.E.D. reading folder is due on Friday, October 26th. Please make sure that the log is completely filled out including a parent signature!

Science: In science this week, learners will begin studying earth materials from our natural world.

Dear Parents,

This week we will begin a study about rocks. For one of our first activities, we will be learning how rocks are alike and how they are different. In order to do this, we will be sorting rocks by color, texture, size, etc. Please help your child find three rocks, put them in a Ziploc bag, and return them to school by Friday, October 26th. It would be best if each of these rocks were different from each other in some way, for example, different size, shape, color, etc. You are also welcome to send in a small rock or mineral collection if you have one from home.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will explore landmarks and symbols through critical thinking experiences and collaborative teamwork.

Red Ribbon Week
Our TCE student council has come up with some amazing theme days to celebrate Red Ribbon Week THIS week October 22nd - 26th.


Report Cards
Friday, October 19th, your child brought home their report card for the first nine weeks of school. If you would like more clarification for what each standard means and what it looks like for your child to met standard, approach standard, and make insignificant progress towards standard please check out the CISD standards-based report card rubrics found here. Please note that every nine weeks the same standard may be reported on but the rigor and expectations increase from nine weeks to nine weeks. Please reach out to your child's teacher(s) if you have any questions or would like clarification regarding their report card. 

Storybook Pumpkin Patch
The Town Center Elementary Library will host a Storybook Pumpkin Patch for any TCE students that would like to participate. At home, students and/or families can decorate a pumpkin to look like one of their favorite children's book characters. Students may bring their decorated pumpkin to the TCE Library 7:30-8:00am on Monday or Tuesday morning, October 29-30, 2018. The pumpkins will be on display for viewing Monday, October 29th - Thursdday, November 1st. Pumpkins must be removed from the library by 3pm on Friday, November 2nd. Snacks
Please remember that second grade has a snack each morning, as it is a long day for our learners. Many learners are coming to school each day without a snack and expecting one from their teacher. Teachers are unable to pass out snacks to learners due to allergies and food restrictions. Please send a small, healthy snack for your learner each morning does not require a fork or spoon to eat or contains peanuts/tree nuts. Please see below for examples of a healthy snack for learning. 

PTO Family Movie Night
Join us in the gym on Friday, October 26th at 6pm. Dinner, drink, and snacks will be sold starting at 6pm while supplies last. All dinner and concession items sold will benefit our PTO. Pre-register online at www.tcepto.com to guarantee your dinner and preferred choice.


Rocks for Science

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will apply their knowledge and skills in solving addition and subtraction problems with two-digits to solve one and two-step word problems. Learners will use strip diagrams to represent word problems.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will begin to look at nonfiction texts and how to pay attention to details. In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. In grammar, we will look at adjectives.

Science: In science this week, learners will finish observing the motion of objects exploring through wind-up toys.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will create timelines of their own lives and study the history of Coppell incorporating timelines.

Metrocrest Food Drive
Our TCE student council is partnering with Metrocrest Services to provide food donations for our local families and senior citizens. The food drive will run October 9th - 19th. Student council will have boxes at the end of each downstairs hallway that learners can place their donations in. This food drive will be in place of the food drive that has traditionally taken place during the week before Thanksgiving.

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will begin to subtract two-digit numbers using mental strategies and algorithm based on their knowledge of place value and continue to add up to two two-digit numbers. They will apply this knowledge and skills to solve one and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue with strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending.

Science: In science this week, learners will continue to investigate the effects on objects by increasing or decreasing amount of light, heat, and sound energy such as how the color of an object appears different in dimmer light.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will explain how people depend on the physical environment and natural resources to meet basic needs.

Announcements

Second Grade Performance
Our second-grade learners will be having their performance at our first Spirit Rally on October 12th. This will be at 8 am in the gym and should last approximately 20 minutes. Mr. Miller and our second graders are looking forward to sharing what they have been working on in the music room with this fun 'fall themed' performance! Please have students wear their TCE Grade Level Spirit Shirt on this day!

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will discover how weather affects settlements.

Toys
We are asking that no toys be brought to school from home. Our classrooms are filled with items to keep us busy and lost or broken toys result in very sad feelings! Please help us in reminding your child to keep toys at home. If toys are found out at school, they will be collected by the teacher and returned to the parent for safe keeping.

September 24th - 28th

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will generate numbers that are greater than or less than given a whole number up to 100. Learners will also use place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 100 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols (>, <, or =).

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue with strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. We will look at proper nouns in a mentor text taken from our favorite story "Wayside School" in Grammar Talks.

Science: In science this week, learners will combine materials that when put together can do things that they cannot do by themselves such as building a tower or bridge and justify the selection of those materials based on their physical properties.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and each of the oceans, on maps and globes.

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will us standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 100.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will learn strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will explore how to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. We will also launch our Grammer Talks by looking at common nouns in a mentor text taken from our favorite story "Wayside School."

Science: In science this week, learners will predict, observe, and record changes in the state of matter caused by magnetism. We will also classify matter by the properties of sinking and floating.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and each of the oceans, on maps and globes.

September 10th - 14th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will begin to compose (when a number is being put together) and decompose (breaking down) numbers to 100.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will learn strategies to help us keep tabs on our comprehension as we read. We will also continue building reading stamina as we work toward our goal of 25! In writing workshop, we will talk about the "Small Moments" in our lives and writing about them.

Science: In science this week, learners will predict, observe, and record changes in the state of matter caused by heating and cooling such as ice becoming liquid water or condensation forming on the outside of a glass of ice water.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will be finishing their community map and we will introduce the different type of landforms.

Special Friends Day
Please plan on joining us Friday, September 14th for a fun-filled day at Town Center! We have designated times throughout the day for "Special Friends" (family & family friends) to visit our learners' classrooms in order to see some of the great things they are learning and doing. Our campus book fair will also be open during this time. Please click here to view the grade level specific visiting times. Second grade will celebrate special friends day from 10:30-11:30.
In order to expedite the check-in process for our Special Friend's Day visitors, please fill in the form above  BY THURSDAY, SEPT. 13TH AT 10:00AM in order for us to quickly sign in the special friend and send them to meet up with your child.

Fall Family Picnic
TCE will also have our annual Fall Family Picnic Friday, September 14th from 6-8PM at the Town Center Plaza located adjacent to our playground and behind City Hall. It is a great time to connect with other families and staff.
