September 24th - 28th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will generate numbers that are greater than or less than given a whole number up to 100. Learners will also use place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 100 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols (>, <, or =).

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue with strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. We will look at proper nouns in a mentor text taken from our favorite story "Wayside School" in Grammar Talks.

Science: In science this week, learners will combine materials that when put together can do things that they cannot do by themselves such as building a tower or bridge and justify the selection of those materials based on their physical properties.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and each of the oceans, on maps and globes.

Fall conferences are coming up! We have October 5th set aside for parent/teacher conferences. Please sign-up using the link for your child's homeroom teacher.


Background Checks
CISD requires background checks on any classroom visitors, school volunteers, and field trip chaperones. A new background check is required each year. It can sometimes take several weeks to process, so we encourage all parents to complete one at the start of the school year. You can access the form on the CISD website or by clicking here.

September 17th - 21st

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will us standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 100.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will learn strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will explore how to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. We will also launch our Grammer Talks by looking at common nouns in a mentor text taken from our favorite story "Wayside School."

Science: In science this week, learners will predict, observe, and record changes in the state of matter caused by magnetism. We will also classify matter by the properties of sinking and floating.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and each of the oceans, on maps and globes.

Shop the Bookfair Online
Did you not have enough time to stop by our Fall Book Fair? did we run out of an item that you wanted? Please shop our Book Fair online until September 20th: http://www.scholastic.com/bf/towncenterelementaryschool
Purchases made online will be delivered to the school about two weeks after the Book Fair, and profits will go towards our school library.

September 10th - 14th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will begin to compose (when a number is being put together) and decompose (breaking down) numbers to 100.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will learn strategies to help us keep tabs on our comprehension as we read. We will also continue building reading stamina as we work toward our goal of 25! In writing workshop, we will talk about the "Small Moments" in our lives and writing about them.

Science: In science this week, learners will predict, observe, and record changes in the state of matter caused by heating and cooling such as ice becoming liquid water or condensation forming on the outside of a glass of ice water.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will be finishing their community map and we will introduce the different type of landforms.

Special Friends Day
Please plan on joining us Friday, September 14th for a fun-filled day at Town Center! We have designated times throughout the day for "Special Friends" (family & family friends) to visit our learners' classrooms in order to see some of the great things they are learning and doing. Our campus book fair will also be open during this time. Please click here to view the grade level specific visiting times. Second grade will celebrate special friends day from 10:30-11:30.
In order to expedite the check-in process for our Special Friend's Day visitors, please fill in the form above  BY THURSDAY, SEPT. 13TH AT 10:00AM in order for us to quickly sign in the special friend and send them to meet up with your child.

Fall Family Picnic
TCE will also have our annual Fall Family Picnic Friday, September 14th from 6-8PM at the Town Center Plaza located adjacent to our playground and behind City Hall. It is a great time to connect with other families and staff.

September 3rd - 7th

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will begin to build fluency in adding and subtracting numbers 1-20. We will cover different strategies to help learners, these strategies will eventually become so effortless it will appear that leaders have the basic fact memorized.

Reading: In reading this week, we will officially launch our Reading Workshop! We will discuss how readers get stronger by reading a lot and continue to work on building reading stamina. In writing, we will continue to gather ideas and build our writing stamina during workshop time. We will also begin handwriting practice and our new Show Me Spelling.

Science: In science this week, learners will explore physical properties and compare changes in materials caused by heating and cooling.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, we will continue to learn about the characteristics of a map, and they will make their own map of a community.

Picture Day
Picture day will take place the morning of Thursday, September 6th.  This will be a time where students will have their individual photos taken. August 27th - 31st

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will use manipulatives to represent numbers to 100 in different ways. We will focus on determining whether a number is even or odd using manipulatives and generating numbers that are 10 more/less than a given a number using a 100's chart.

Reading: In reading and writing this week, we will launch our workshops! We will discuss workshop expectations, select a "good fit" book, and discuss where authors get ideas of writing. We will also meet our new writing partners and learn how to help each other when we are working in workshop.

Science: In science this week, we will start to measure, test, and record physical properties of matter, including temperature, mass, magnetism, and the ability to sink or float.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, we will learn how to read maps and create a map of the classroom.

Announcements


Curriculum Night
Curriculum night will take place at Town Center Thursday, August 30th. Kindergarten-2nd grade will be meeting from 5:30-6:30. If you have a learner in 3rd-5th grade they will meet from 6:30-7:00. Please make arrangments to attend without your children to hear all about second grade!

Family Photos
If you have not had a chance to send in a family photo to your child's homeroom teacher, please do so by Friday, August 31st. When we come together as a classroom, we become a kind of family. In building our classroom families this year, we want to include your own families as they are an important part of who you are. If you do not have a printed copy of your family picture, you may email us a digital copy. Also, if you do not have one picture of your family, you may make a collage. Labor Day Holiday
There is no school, Monday, September 3rd for the Labor Day holiday. CISD schools will resume on Tuesday, September 4th.

Picture day order forms will come home by Monday, August 27th. Picture day will take place the morning of Thursday, September 6th.

August 20th - 24th

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will work to get to know one another through creating surveys and graphs of their peers' likes and interests.

Reading: In reading this week, we will look at character traits by using the mentor texts Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon and Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun. We will also compare the characters of both texts and write reflections in our journals.

Science: In science this week, we will discuss what it means to be a safe scientist and set up our science journals.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, we will continue to establish our classroom communities and learn about our peers (community members).

Character at TCE


This week (August 15th-18th) we discussed what it means to be kind, how to treat others and what it looks like to include those who may feel invisible. Talk with your child about some of the ways they plan on making an impact this year through acts of kindness.
