Welcome to 2nd grade!

Welcome second grade families!! We are so excited to meet you and for a wonderful year of fun and learning. Please check back to our blog weekly for calendar updates, what we are learning, and any announcements regarding second grade and TCE.

A link to our blog will be accessible through Schoology in the parent information folder and emailed out each week with updates. We want to point you to this folder for parent resources and tools.

We love connecting with our second grade families and being available to answer any questions or concerns you have. If you need to contact a second grade teacher, please use the information below.

Email is the quickest and easiest way to contact your child's teacher. Email is checked periodically throughout the day. You may also leave a voicemail for you child's teacher through their CISD phone.

The second grade teachers' conference period is from 1:10-1:55 each day. Please contact your homeroom teacher through email or phone if you need to set up a conference with your child's teachers.

More information coming soon!

Choice Board
The Schoology Assignment Weekly Checklist is updated for the week of May 11th-15th. If you would like to make a digital copy of the checklist, you may do so by clicking here. You will notice that the checklist looks a little bit different this week. This week learners will work through a Must Do/May Do board of all of their course assignments. There is a folder for the week in each of their Schoology courses with this board linked and a place for learners to upload their assignments for each subject.

Materials Pick-Up
Big picture

We have compiled all of your child(ren)'s items that are still on campus and have one paper bag per child to distribute to families. This bag will contain items such as journals, folders, personal items from cubbies, spring picture orders, etc. The process for delivering these paper bags will be similar to what we did for iPad curbside pickup. Due to limiting our volunteers, teachers will only be volunteering during their grade level slot. The second grade teachers will only be at pick-up from 11:00-12:00 and would LOVE to see your children. You are welcome to come through the loop as many times as you are able to throughout the day in order to see your child's individual child's teacher. Below is important information to help that day run as smooth as possible (pick-up schedule above):
  • We will be on the side cafeteria loop.
  • Have your rainy day dismissal cards posted on your window.
  • Stay in your vehicle and drive through the loop.
  • Nurse Kane will be in the loop to return any child's medication that was not picked up already. Expired over the counter meds have been disposed of by the nurse.
  • Our librarian, Mrs. Mancuso, will be in the loop to collect any library books from your home that need to be returned.

Schoology Weekly Checksheet
Based on feedback received from second grade parents, we have created a Schoology Assignment Weekly Checklist to help support your child's learning at home. Each week there will be an updated tab at the bottom with each of the tasks/assignments that need to be completed throughout the week. If you would like to make a digital copy of the checklist, you may do so by clicking here.

As a reminder, all assignments for the entire week will be posted in Schoology at 8 a.m. on Monday mornings to allow for you to spread out throughout the week/weekend as your family sees the best fit. Each week the objectives for the upcoming week are published to the blog. We realize that each family has its own unique circumstances during this time and we want to support you as best we can. There is a schedule linked in Schoology each week as an option but this is just one option in how to spread out the workload throughout the week/weekend.

Please do not forget the following digital learning expectations below each week for iStation,  DreamBox, Reflex Math, and Imagine Learning.

iStation

Because it is the beginning of the month, learners will need to complete their ISIP assessment on iStation this week. All they will need to do is log onto iStation and click "Reading with ISIP" on that day and it will automatically take them to the assessment. It should take anywhere from 20-45 minutes approximately. Please make sure they are not receiving assistance while they are taking the assessment as we use the data results to help us design instruction. They will know the assessment is complete when the blue rectangle box on the bottom right-hand side of the screen goes away. If you have any questions regarding iStation, feel free to reach out to Mrs. Judd or Ms. McGraw.

DreamBox

As a reminder, learners are required to complete at least 5 lessons on DreamBox each week. These can be completed all at once or spread out throughout the week as your family sees the best fit. We ask that learners complete any assigned lesson (marked with a blue calendar) before picking which lesson they would like to complete. To view their lessons completed each week, learners can click on the image of their avatar in the top-left corner of the screen.

Reflex Math
Each learner is required each week to work on Reflex Math three times a week for approximately 15-20 minutes. Our goal is for learners to earn a green light 3 times a week. Although the Green Light depends on students correctly answering facts, not time used, students can typically get the Green Light in 15 minutes of concentrated use. Read here to learn more about how to help your child successfully achieve a green light three times a week.

Imagine Learning
Imagine Learning is a program used with select EL learners. If your child had Imagine Learning login information on their login sheet, we ask that they are using for approximately 20-30 minutes daily (Monday-Friday). Please make sure that your child is finishing their lesson before logging out. If a learner logs out before their lesson is complete, they will have to start it over upon their next login.

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, I can use concrete models of square units to find the area of a rectangle by covering it with no gaps or overlaps, counting to find the total number of square units, and describing the measurement using a number and the unit.
C-Measurement: FE 2nd Grade Team

Language Arts: In reading this week I can use evidence to make inferences. In writing this week, I can edit and revise my writing.

Science: In science this week, I can observe, record, and compare how physical characteristics and behaviors of animals help them meet their basic needs.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, I can trace the development of a product from a natural source to a finished product through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
