2nd Grade Announcements

  • Lions Club  - Each year the Lions Club of Coppell provides holiday baskets and toys for families in the Coppell ISD attendance area. Last year Lion's Club provided a special Christmas for over 127 families and hundreds of children who might otherwise have gone without. The food baskets and toys are delivered by members of the Lions Club of Coppell, and the identity of the recipients is kept confidential. All Lion's Club needs need to know is the address and the family demographics, sizes, and any special needs the family may have. If your family would like to apply for a holiday basket and toys, please email Town Center's counselor, Kelly Matlock, at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.
  • Family Lunch Fridays - Starting Oct. 14th, our campus is open each Friday for lunch visitors! When you arrive you will sign in at the front office and receive a visitor badge that must be worn at all times. You will need a photo ID (license or passport). You will be able to eat lunch with your child at the designated tables for lunch visitors. You may only eat with your child. No other learners may be invited to eat with you. You may purchase lunch in the cafeteria or bring a lunch with you. Parents will be dismissed from the cafeteria. You will need to go back through the front office to sign out at the end of lunchtime. Please see Ms. Martin's Principal Newsletter for details on who may eat with your child and a form to fill out for non-parent lunch visitors. 
  • Background Checks - If you have not had a chance to fill out a background check please fill one out for yourself or update last year's! Click here to register as a new volunteer or confirm your information from last year. This must be completed every school year for you to volunteer at the school. The district will send you an email when your background check has cleared. Any opportunities for volunteering at the school, including holiday parties, will require a cleared background check. What we are learning?

Math Workshop - In Math from now until Winter Break, learners add and subtract numbers using mental strategies and algorithms. Learners will solve word problems involving addition and subtraction within 1,000 using various strategies. Learners will also explain the strategy they chose to use to solve a given addition or subtraction problem. 



Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop, learners will predict what a character will do based on what they have already read using the mentor text How to Catch Santa. Don't forget that our Library Day is Thursday each week! Your child should check out 3 books each week - one nonfiction, one "good fit" and one free choice.

Writing Workshop- In Writing Workshop, learners will use imagination to begin writing and revising fiction stories. In Grammar, learners will explore how to use commas in a series and how to add adjectives and adverbs to their writing to make it more descriptive. 

Social Studies - In Social Studies, learners will be learning about cultural and ethnic celebrations. 

Science - In Science, learners will be identifying a problem and proposing a possible solution regarding how to use, conserve, and/or dispose of natural resources.

  • Turkey Trot - We will have our Turkey Trot during specials (2nd-9:15) on Friday, November 18th. This is a day where each grade level has a themed run day out on the track during their specials time. We will have several throughout the year. What we are learning?

Math Workshop - In Math, learners will generate a number that is greater than or less than a given whole number up to 1,000. Learners will also use place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 1,000 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols (>, <, or =). Learners will use an understanding of place value to say a number that is 10 more or 10 less than a given number to 1,000. Learners will also be able to tell a classmate how two numbers compare using comparative language. 



Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop, learners will identify and describe literary language and make inferences using the mentor text Turk and Runt. Don't forget that our Library Day is Thursday each week! Your child should check out 3 books each week - one nonfiction, one "good fit" and one free choice.

  • Veterans Day Ceremony - We'd love for any veterans that are family or friends of our TCE family to join us Friday, November 11th at 8:15 a.m. Each grade level will participate, along with the TCE Choir or CHS Madrigals. What we are learning?

Math Workshop - In Math, learners will represent numbers up to 1,000 using standard, word, and expanded forms. Learners will locate the position of a given whole number on an open number line and name a whole number that corresponds to a specific point on a number line. Learners will explain why they chose a certain position to place a given number on an open number line using academic vocabulary. 



Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop, learners will notice how characters think and feel using the mentor text Those Shoes. Don't forget that our Library Day is Thursday each week! Your child should check out 3 books each week - one nonfiction, one "good fit" and one free choice.

Writing Workshop- In Writing Workshop, learners will conclude their informational writing unit and begin writing fiction stories that keep readers at the "edge of their seats". In Grammar/Phonics, learners will identify and use long vowel patterns in their writing. 

Social Studies- In Social Studies, learners will be learning about communication, transportation, and recreation and comparing and contrasting the differences between now and back then. We will also continue to learn about Veterans Day. 

Science - In Science, learners will be distinguishing between natural and manmade resources.

What we are learning?

Math Workshop - In Math, learners will compose and decompose numbers up to 1,000 in more than one way. Learners can listen to a number read aloud and decompose the number in more than one way. Learners will continue to review addition and subtraction strategies in class with two-digit numbers. Feel free to practice at home and use the strategy videos linked below to help!


Reading Workshop - In Reading Workshop, learners will take their November Station ISIP assessment. They will also compare and contrast information using the mentor texts The Rough Face Girl and Cinderella. In Grammar, they will be exploring the subject and predicate parts of a sentence. Don't forget that our Library Day is Thursday each week! Your child should be checking out 3 books each week - one nonfiction, one "good fit" and one free choice.

Writing Workshop- In Writing Workshop, learners will wrap up their information writing unit. They will edit their writing with a partner using a checklist, write their final copy, and add text features like a table of contents, a glossary, and illustrations to "publish" their book. 

Social Studies- In Social Studies, learners will identify landmarks and their significance within the community, state, and nation. We will also be starting to learn a little about Veterans Day.

Science - In Science, learners will be investigating the way sound energy works and affects objects.
