2nd Grade RoughRiders Baseball Game Field Trip
Second grade will go on a field trip to RoughRiders Education Day at the ballpark on Tuesday, May 13th. Second graders will spend time leading up to our field trip exploring grade-level topics with a baseball lens. We'll then go out to the ballgame to help us connect our learning to the real-world experience of watching a baseball game. Additionally, during the RoughRider's Education Day, they will have hans on, immersive stations sponsored by the Perot Museum, YMCA, Heritage Museum, and more.
We will be leaving school around 9:00 AM and won't arrive back to school until around 2:00 PM. Lunch will be provided at the ballgame as part of your ticket purchase and will consist of a combo meal with a hot dog and soda or water for each child. The RoughRiders have a veggie burger or gluten-free hot dog bun if your child has a dietary restriction. If your child has dietary restrictions that cannot be met by the substitutions, please reach out to your homeroom teacher.
The cost of the filed trip is $16.00 including admission to the Education Day ballgame and lunch. Your child brought home a permission slip on Monday, March 10th that needs to be signed and returned with cash only by Friday, March 28th. All parts of the permission slip need to be filled out for your child to participate in our field trip. We ask that you send in exactly $16.00, as change will not be given. We will be taking chaperones with us on our field trip to the RoughRiders game. Chaperones will be responsible for a small group of learners while at the ballpark. The cost of a chaperone ticket is $16.00 (lunch included) and chaperones will need to provide their own transportation to the ballpark. Chaperones can turn in their chaperone cost in the envelope with their child and check that they would like to chaperone our field trip. All chaperones must have a CISD background check (done online) completed at least 10 days before the date of the field trip.

Coppell Cares
Coppell Cares offers the Weekend Backpack Program for families who have financial need. Each Friday, learners receive a bag of snacks for the weekend. The goal of the program is to help eliminate food insecurity for children. They provide nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack items to eligible CISD children (and siblings). This weekly food program helps feed children over the weekend during the school year when they are not receiving meals at school.
If you would like your child(ren) to participate in this program, please complete the online application below. If you would prefer a paper copy to be sent home with your child, please email TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock at kmatlock@coppellisd.com. Families may sign up for this program at any time during the school year. Deliveries will begin Friday, September 6th. Deliveries will be suspended for Thanksgiving week, Winter Break, and Spring Break.

We are excited to have so many of our learners that have been out sick back at school. We'd love to meet our campus attendance goal of 97%, and we will keep you all updated weekly on our progress. As a reminder, if your child is sick, we want them to stay home and rest. Our district attendance policy states, "Students must be free of fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea for 24 hours without the use of medication before returning to school.” Otherwise, we'd love to have them at school in order to maximize their instructional time with teachers and make the most of their school days. If your child does need to miss school due to being sick, please reach out to your child's teacher to find out what work they need to make up.
Math Workshop - In math workshop, learners will classify and sort 3D solids, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes as special rectangular prisms), and triangular prisms, based on their attributes. We will also compose 3D solids with given properties or attributes.
Reading Workshop - Our readers have been diving deeper into nonfiction texts and will begin nonfiction book clubs this week. We will focus on comprehension skills like identifying the main idea and key details, asking questions as we read and using text features to understand.
Writing Workshop - We are starting our next unit, Nonfiction Writing Projects! I love this unit so much because it allows your learners to show their writing in such creative ways! They will be researching and creating products about animals they will be researching. This week they will choose their animals.
Social Studies - In Social Studies, learners will be able to describe the importance of a job in relation to our needs and wants.
Science - In Science, learners will identify and compare the parts of plants. They will describe the ways plants spread their seeds such as other living things, wind, and/or water.
- Ask your child how you can divide halves into fourths. As your child how you can divide fourths into eighths. What makes a fraction?
- What are the parts of a plant? What are some ways seeds are spread?
- How can people be both producers and consumers?
- We have started our new unit this week over opinion writing! Ask your child what topic they chose and have them tell you why it is important.
- Working on reading high frequency words fluently is a great way to build reading skills! Check out the lists we work with and challenge your learner to practice them using these activities!
