Terrific Texans
Throughout the week our learners at TCE work hard at going above and beyond! When any teacher catches them standing out for exhibiting our character trait of the week they are awarded a Terrific Texan. At the end of the week, there is a school-wide drawing and 3 winners are chosen from each grade level.
Character Trait of the Week
Week of October 28th:

Pumpkins for Math & Science
Next week on October 31st second graders will be investigating pumpkins in an integrated math and science lesson. We are asking learners to donate a pumpkin for the investigation. Pumpkins should be a size that your child can independently carry (nothing too big). Part of our investigation will involve cutting open pumpkins to graph and sort the seeds. If you would like to volunteer during your child's class time you may sign-up here. (linked here) If volunteering, you must have a CISD background check on file for the 2024-2025 school year. Coppell Cares
Coppell Cares offers the Weekend Backpack Program for families who have financial need. Each Friday, learners receive a bag of snacks for the weekend. The goal of the program is to help eliminate food insecurity for children. They provide nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack items to eligible CISD children (and siblings). This weekly food program helps feed children over the weekend during the school year when they are not receiving meals at school.
If you would like your child(ren) to participate in this program, please complete the online application below. If you would prefer a paper copy to be sent home with your child, please email TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock at kmatlock@coppellisd.com. Families may sign up for this program at any time during the school year. Deliveries will begin Friday, September 6th. Deliveries will be suspended for Thanksgiving week, Winter Break, and Spring Break.
Math Workshop - In math workshop, learners will represent addition and subtraction word problems where there is an unknown value within the problem.
A copy of this parent letter came home with your child on Friday, October 25th. It includes vocabulary that will be covered in our upcoming addition and subtraction unit, an explanation of the different strategies covered over the upcoming unit, and an optional tic-tac-toe board to practice math skills at home.
Reading Workshop - As we come to the end of our nonfiction reading unit, we will practice finding the main idea of a section by using supporting details. We will also compare and contrast different topics, using our reading to learn skills!
Writing Workshop - In writing workshop, learners will about past tense verbs and apply them in our writing. We are publishing a fun fall writing piece about "How to Catch a Monster".
Social Studies - In Social Studies we will begin learning about community, state, and national landmarks.
Science - In Science, learners will describe how to conserve resources.
- Ask your child to tell you a true fact from a bar graph. Then ask your child how to turn that true fact into their own word problem that can be answered from the bar graph.
- Ask your child to tell you an example of natural and manmade resources.
- Ask your child how we can conserve Earth's resources.
- Ask your child to tell you about important places in Coppell like the old town barber shop, farmer's market and Town Center!
- Look for words with the suffix -ed when reading together. Ask your child to tell you which sound of -ed the word makes (/t/, /d/ or /id/).
