Announcements

Reminders from your Second Grade Teachers

*iPads - Please remember to send your child's iPad each day to school fully charged.

*Headphones - Please check with your child that they have working headphones/earbuds at school. Learners have many times where they are watching a video or can listen to directions and/or books and apps that need audio. Thank you so much for your help with this!

*Weather - As our weather outside is colder, please remember that we will still be going outside for recess. District policy states that if the "feels like" temperature is above 32 degrees we will be going outside for some fresh air. Please make sure your child has dressed appropriately for recess weather.

*Snack - We have a short snack time each day. It is important that they have a healthy and nutritious snack each day to fuel their bodies. We also ask that the snack you send be completely free of peanuts/tree nuts. This will help provide a safe environment for all learners.

Valentines Day

Our class Valentine's Day party will be on Monday, February 14th @ 2:00 pm. Please have your child address a valentine's card to each child in their homeroom. The names of the students in our class were sent home the week of January 24th-28th and emailed out too. You may attach a small treat to the card (if you would like) but please make sure all treats are peanut/tree nut-free.

Students should decorate and bring their own decorated bag or box from home to hold their valentines. Please have your child bring their box/bag and a bag of cards to school the week of February 7th and no later than February 11th.

All elementary campuses will be able to have the 1-2 assigned PTO room parents attend and run the parties on February 14th. No other parents or visitors will be able to join that day!

What we are learning?

Math - In Math, learners will begin their introduction to multiplication and division. Learners will model, create, and describe contextual multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of concrete objects are joined. Learners will listen to a multiplication situation read aloud and create a corresponding model. In second grade we will not focus on memorizing multiplication/division facts with automaticity, this will be covered in third grade.

Reading- In Reading learners will examine character response using the mentor text Each Kindness. In Phonics learners will look at the suffixes -ful and -less and how they affect words.

Writing- In writing learners will be reading My Father's Dragon and writing detailed responses to our reading. We will focus on characters, predictions, settings, and chapters this week.

Social Studies- In Social Studies learners will conclude landforms and bodies of water and will move into exploring the continents and oceans as we wrap up our geography unit.

Science - In Science learners will look at what a meteorologist does. Learners will also choose a vacation spot and track/graph the week's weather there.
