October 8th - 12th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will begin to subtract two-digit numbers using mental strategies and algorithm based on their knowledge of place value and continue to add up to two two-digit numbers. They will apply this knowledge and skills to solve one and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue with strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending.

Science: In science this week, learners will continue to investigate the effects on objects by increasing or decreasing amount of light, heat, and sound energy such as how the color of an object appears different in dimmer light.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will explain how people depend on the physical environment and natural resources to meet basic needs.

Announcements

Second Grade Performance
Our second-grade learners will be having their performance at our first Spirit Rally on October 12th. This will be at 8 am in the gym and should last approximately 20 minutes. Mr. Miller and our second graders are looking forward to sharing what they have been working on in the music room with this fun 'fall themed' performance! Please have students wear their TCE Grade Level Spirit Shirt on this day!

Metrocrest Food Drive
Our TCE student council is partnering with Metrocrest Services to provide food donations for our local families and senior citizens. The food drive will run October 9th - 19th. Student council will have boxes at the end of each downstairs hallway that learners can place their donations in. This food drive will be in place of the food drive that has traditionally taken place during the week before Thanksgiving.

What are we learning?

Announcements

Toys
We are asking that no toys be brought to school from home. Our classrooms are filled with items to keep us busy and lost or broken toys result in very sad feelings! Please help us in reminding your child to keep toys at home. If toys are found out at school, they will be collected by the teacher and returned to the parent for safe keeping.

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will generate numbers that are greater than or less than given a whole number up to 100. Learners will also use place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 100 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols (>, <, or =).

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will continue with strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will continue to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. We will look at proper nouns in a mentor text taken from our favorite story "Wayside School" in Grammar Talks.

Science: In science this week, learners will combine materials that when put together can do things that they cannot do by themselves such as building a tower or bridge and justify the selection of those materials based on their physical properties.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and each of the oceans, on maps and globes.

September 17th - 21st

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will us standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 100.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will learn strategies to help us solve "tricky words." In writing workshop, we will explore how to write narratives that contain a beginning, a middle, and an ending. We will also launch our Grammer Talks by looking at common nouns in a mentor text taken from our favorite story "Wayside School."

Science: In science this week, learners will predict, observe, and record changes in the state of matter caused by magnetism. We will also classify matter by the properties of sinking and floating.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and each of the oceans, on maps and globes.

Shop the Bookfair Online
Did you not have enough time to stop by our Fall Book Fair? did we run out of an item that you wanted? Please shop our Book Fair online until September 20th: http://www.scholastic.com/bf/towncenterelementaryschool
Purchases made online will be delivered to the school about two weeks after the Book Fair, and profits will go towards our school library.

September 10th - 14th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will begin to compose (when a number is being put together) and decompose (breaking down) numbers to 100.

Reading: In reading workshop this week, we will learn strategies to help us keep tabs on our comprehension as we read. We will also continue building reading stamina as we work toward our goal of 25! In writing workshop, we will talk about the "Small Moments" in our lives and writing about them.

Science: In science this week, learners will predict, observe, and record changes in the state of matter caused by heating and cooling such as ice becoming liquid water or condensation forming on the outside of a glass of ice water.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will be finishing their community map and we will introduce the different type of landforms.

Special Friends Day
Please plan on joining us Friday, September 14th for a fun-filled day at Town Center! We have designated times throughout the day for "Special Friends" (family & family friends) to visit our learners' classrooms in order to see some of the great things they are learning and doing. Our campus book fair will also be open during this time. Please click here to view the grade level specific visiting times. Second grade will celebrate special friends day from 10:30-11:30.
In order to expedite the check-in process for our Special Friend's Day visitors, please fill in the form above  BY THURSDAY, SEPT. 13TH AT 10:00AM in order for us to quickly sign in the special friend and send them to meet up with your child.

Fall Family Picnic
TCE will also have our annual Fall Family Picnic Friday, September 14th from 6-8PM at the Town Center Plaza located adjacent to our playground and behind City Hall. It is a great time to connect with other families and staff.

September 3rd - 7th

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will begin to build fluency in adding and subtracting numbers 1-20. We will cover different strategies to help learners, these strategies will eventually become so effortless it will appear that leaders have the basic fact memorized.

Reading: In reading this week, we will officially launch our Reading Workshop! We will discuss how readers get stronger by reading a lot and continue to work on building reading stamina. In writing, we will continue to gather ideas and build our writing stamina during workshop time. We will also begin handwriting practice and our new Show Me Spelling.

Science: In science this week, learners will explore physical properties and compare changes in materials caused by heating and cooling.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, we will continue to learn about the characteristics of a map, and they will make their own map of a community.

August 27th - 31st

Welcome second-grade families! Thank you for taking the time to read our second-grade blog. Make sure you are checking weekly for calendar updates, what we are a learning and announcements for second grade!

What are we learning?


Math: In math this week, learners will use manipulatives to represent numbers to 100 in different ways. We will focus on determining whether a number is even or odd using manipulatives and generating numbers that are 10 more/less than a given a number using a 100's chart.

Reading: In reading and writing this week, we will launch our workshops! We will discuss workshop expectations, select a "good fit" book, and discuss where authors get ideas of writing. We will also meet our new writing partners and learn how to help each other when we are working in workshop.

Science: In science this week, we will start to measure, test, and record physical properties of matter, including temperature, mass, magnetism, and the ability to sink or float.

Social Studies: In social studies this week, we will learn how to read maps and create a map of the classroom.

Curriculum Night
Curriculum night will take place at Town Center Thursday, August 30th. Kindergarten-2nd grade will be meeting from 5:30-6:30. If you have a learner in 3rd-5th grade they will meet from 6:30-7:00. Please make arrangments to attend without your children to hear all about second grade!

Family Photos
If you have not had a chance to send in a family photo to your child's homeroom teacher, please do so by Friday, August 31st. When we come together as a classroom, we become a kind of family. In building our classroom families this year, we want to include your own families as they are an important part of who you are. Labor Day Holiday
There is no school, Monday, September 3rd for the Labor Day holiday. CISD schools will resume on Tuesday, September 4th.
